Deborah van der Beek is a sculptor, author & illustrator. She studied in London, Cambridge and Cardiff, and wrote and illustrated several books before concentrating on her sculpture. The art critic Peter Davies writes of her works that they “will surely become an enduring set of memorable images.” Most of van der Beek’s sculptures of humans and animals have animated, rugged surfaces. They vividly bring to life myths and legends, from Amazon warrior women to the outlaw Ned Kelly. Some newer works also mix up legends, old and new, their surfaces embedded with castaway objects that allude to ecological concerns.
