Biography

Painter and stage designer, born in Melbourne, Australia, who studied ballet with Edouard Borovansky. He designed décors and held solo exhibitions in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide. After gaining a British Council Scholarship in 1950, Rowell studied theatre design in London 1950-51, and between 1950-60 designed for productions at the Old Vic, Shakespeare Memorial Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon, the Royal Ballet and many other companies.

Rowell took part in group shows, including Three Australian Artists, at Bear Lane Gallery, Oxford, 1960 and Recent Australian Paintings at the Whitechapel Art Gallery, 1961. Among solo exhibitions were Roland, Brose and Delbanco, 1952; one of theatre designs at Arthur Jeffress Gallery, 1954; Bear Lane Gallery, 1961; Reading Museum and Art Gallery, 1963; and New Art Centre, 1965. Rowell continued to design and show in Australia, where, major public galleries hold examples, as do the Victoria & Albert Museum, Arts Council, Manchester Art Gallery and Pembroke College, Oxford.
