Biography

A painter and teacher, Copnall studied at the Royal Academy Schools 1950-54. He lived in Spain in the late 1950s, during which time he turned from figurative painting to abstraction. He taught at the Central School of Arts for many years from 1973. In 1972-73 he won Arts Council Awards and a British Council Award in 1979. In 1989 he was elected a member of the London Group. Exhibitions included Piccadilly Gallery, 1955 (his first solo show); Wildenstein Gallery, 1958; Annely Juda Fine Art 1969; John Moores Liverpool Exhibitions from 1972; R.A. Summer Exhibitions from 1980. Later one-man exhibitions included Reed?s Wharf Gallery at Barbican Centre, 1996 and De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill-on-Sea, 1996. Arts Council of Great Britain, Aberdeen Art Gallery & Museum, Bristol and York public galleries and other notable collections hold his work.
